Aeronautics & transportation
Air, surface, and maritime transport all have an important role to play in reducing greenhouse gas levels. In global terms, the transport industry is responsible today for around 22 percent of human-induced CO2 emissions.

Reducing the global greenhouse effect involves optimizing the fuel efficiency of aircraft, ships, cars, and trucks through design, and putting in place operational measures and improvements to transport-related infrastructures.  

In the area of aerodynamic improvements, low-weight materials and structures and smaller and smarter sensors are just some examples of key CSEM technologies that support emissions reduction while maintaining and even increasing safety levels.

We measure pressure distribution and airflow over the wings and fuselages of aircraft during flight testing with our pressure sensing strip. We’re also developing an unsteady, sol-gel, pressure sensitive paint (PSP), which has been tested on a steel aircraft model in a wind tunnel. To improve aircraft safety, our icephobic coatings significantly reduce the adhesion of ice to wings and fuselages. The replacement of certain of the harnesses and cables in aircrafts by our ultra-low-power wireless sensor networks (WSNs) reduces weight and maintenance requirements, lowering CO2 emissions while maintaining the same levels of performance.

We developed the solar energy system of the solar-powered UAV AtlantikSolar, and we’ll provide the solar system of the aircraft SolarStratos, under the direction of the Swiss eco-adventurer Raphaël Domjan.

Working together with European organizations, CSEM is developing an innovative wireless solution to enable—should an emergency occur—a ship’s passengers to be located in real time, centralizing the information needed to evacuate them. 

On the roads, we‘ve demonstrated that WSNs in which the received signal is strong and there is sufficient redundancy of information can be applied to the localization of cars in parking lots. We also guarantee the integrity of bridges, calculating the pressure exerted on suspension cables in real time, also using our WSN solutions.

In trains, we have developed a new system to measure and survey sections of the catenary contact wires that connect rolling stock together and we survey train bogies to easily and precisely detect potential failures—both using our WSN solutions.
